Red Wings: Aces of the Sky – PAX East Preview

Red Wings: Aces of the Sky fills the much-needed void in our hearts where arcade aerial combat used to be. Set against the backdrop of the first world war, Red Wings uses historical settings with comic book visuals to mix history and fiction in the most fun ways possible.

The gameplay is tailor made for Switch. With multiple control schemes including the Pro Controller, two Joy Cons, or even a single Joy Con as if it were a flight stick. During our time with the demo we only tried out the Pro Controller and it felt great. Anyone familiar with arcade flight games will feel right at home. The trigger buttons will shoot and aim your guns while you control the plane’s direction with the left joystick and your speed with the right. Pulling up your sites and honing in on an enemy fighter is rewarding and feels incredible. String together a five-kill streak and you’ll be able to use a special ability where you pull up beside the foe and pull out a pistol. A beautiful graphic novel inspired animation shows you blasting your enemy out of the sky with your pistol. WWI was a new era of war and certain details like that this game stand out.

The campaign will consist of fifty levels, taking place in twenty-four environments. They really built this game with Nintendo’s system in mind. This will make it the perfect title for your morning commute. You can experience bite sized pieces of this game when you’re on the go. You can also take on wave after wave of fighters alone or with a friend. In fact, everything in this game can be played with a friend. Couch Co-Op is often forgotten about these days, so it’s great to see that for this title. While the game will still be a blast to play by yourself, it was so much to play with a buddy. You can even work to string combos together and score the most points. Even when you’re working together, you and your friends will be competing against each other to see who has the highest score at the end of each round.

The graphics really pop. The cell-shaded comic book feel allows the color palette to really stand out. The fighters that you have to chose from are all based on historical planes, but to add some fun into the game there will be a plethora of awesome skins that aren’t exactly historically accurate… and we love them.

Landing first on Switch, the team is shooting to release on all consoles in 2020. So no matter where you play games, you’ll be able to have a blast with Red Wings.
