Kunai – PAX East Preview

Kunai is a newly announced game from developer TURTLEBLAZE and made its debut at PAX East 2019.

In Kunai you take control of a tablet (yes, like an iPad or Amazon Fire kind of tablet) and attempt to take the world back from the evil AI that have taken over. In the words of the developer, “We know AI is going to take over anyway, so what better way to fight them than with other AI?”

Oh, did we mention Tabby has a cape? Because they totally do.

Tabby starts out with nothing more than a jump move but, like all metroidvania games, you’ll soon build your arsenal to help you in your quest. The first thing you’ll find is a katana which inflicts a satisfying amount of damage. Next you’ll pick up not one but two kunai. Kunai are Japanese tools originally intended for farming. Instead of farming, Tabby uses the Kunai to traverse through the future version of the world.

There are some friendlies out there in the world, but you’ll mostly encounter bad guys attempting to destroy you.

The developers also showed off a brief snippet of the game’s time trials, which let us see many more weapons and abilities than we were able to see in our demo. These included machine guns and a dash mechanic.

As a newly announced title, now picked up by The Arcade Crew for publishing purposes, we’re excited to see what Kunai will show us in the near future.
