Telefrag VR – PAX East Preview

Telefrag VR has the potential to be for VR what Doom and Unreal were for the early days of online gaming. At the game’s core it’s an arena shooter with a huge twist. Well, two if you count the fact that it’s in VR. You have the ability to use teleportation, not only as a means to traverse the map but to kill your opponent as well.

Currently only available as a 1V1 match during the beta phase, the team is working on building up to 5V5 or 6V6 if the user base calls for it. The game is so fast paced as it stands that 1V1 is plenty enough to keep you enthralled in battle. Any more players than that would be a lot to handle until you get more used to the fast paced action.

The map that we played had multiple levels that you’ll teleport between in order to track down and kill your enemy. Controls take a little while to get used to since each hand is responsible for a main weapon as well as teleporting. Before each match and after each round you’ll have the chance to choose which weapon layout you prefer. Various iterations include a mixture of heavy and automatic weapons.

It’s hard to play the game without thinking about games like Unreal Tournament and the developers didn’t shy away from the comparisons themselves.

The most exciting feature comes in the form of cross play between Oculus, Vive, and PSVR. Though the game is only available on Steam during the beta, they hope to release the full game on all platforms day and date.

Philip is better at buying video games than he is at playing them. He was once told “it must suck to love something so much and be so terrible at it.” As a boy he would write terrible poems about himself and Ross Perot. He enjoys the best and worst of all forms of media, but nothing in the middle. Puyo Puyo Tetris has almost caused unreconcilable differences between him and his wife. He’s never had a hangover, but not from lack of trying.
