In the debate over whether or not video games should be considered art, GRIS is the type of game that should be at the forefront of the argument. Developer Nomada Studio have crafted a title that emulates art in ways that we haven’t seen before. It goes much deeper than the beautiful hand-drawn and watercolor graphical style. This is a game where things like the meaning, story details, setting, and more are up for interpretation to the player – much like an obscure painting hanging on a wall. What GRIS demonstrates is that there is beauty in ambiguity, and solace in solitude.

Journey Across Bits And Pixels In The Messenger – Review (PC)

Following in the footsteps of the recent explosion of 8-bit and 16-bit retro throwbacks, The Messenger aims to lure players in with its nostalgia and keep them around with versatile platforming and fast paced action. As the first game from new developer Sabotage Studio, The Messenger does a good job of making you feel like a badass and a lightning quick ninja, and adds a unique twist in combining both 8 bit and 16 bit art styles. The focus here is on rapid and frantic movement as you dodge, glide, leap, and rappel your way through levels. There’s not a whole lot here that is new, but it is fun and invigorating nonetheless.

Pikuniku – Preview (PAX East 2018)

Pikuniku is a delightful minimalistic platformer from developer Sectordub and published by Devolver Digital.

In Pikuniku, you play as a little red character that is simply a little red oval with eyes and legs. The world is filled with other cute nonsensical beings who need your help. Despite its bright and colorful aesthetic, something sinister is afoot, with ominous security cameras peaking behind buildings. The mystery of the big brother like town is somehow perfectly contrasted with the minimal cartoony style and has me very curious.

Funded on Kickstarted in 2014, Crossing Souls is an action RPG that takes it’s players back to the 1980s, channeling classics like The Goonies, Stand By Me and even cartoons like G.I. Joe. Though it’s aesthetic inspiration draws heavily from film and TV, there’s quite a bit of Earthbound and Legend of Zelda shining through as well.
