Platted That! – Far Cry: Primal

Ubisoft’s Far Cry series has found a comfortable formula. Players wander around the wilderness shooting up bad guys, setting things on fire, capturing outposts, and being terrified of the chit-chittering of the honey badger. Far Cry: Primal tinkered with the basic formula a bit. Players take on the role of a prehistoric beast-master, outfitted with throwable clubs and spears and a slew of helpful animal pals. It’s pretty fun to chuck a bunch of bees at someone before they get devoured by a saber tooth tiger. Plus, the first time you sling a club into a neanderthal’s head, its pretty wicked.

Far Cry 5 is dropping at the end of the month. Far Cry 5’s Hope County looks, smells, tastes, and sounds like a Far Cry game, returning to the gun totting stealth or mayhem based gameplay the series is known for. While this entry isn’t re-inventing the wheel, it looks to offer a decent amount of fun (and a fully co-op campaign). While gamers wait to head to the green hills of Hope County, the Far Cry: Primal platinum trophy is simple, quick, and just waiting to be unlocked.

Bonus points for any platinum trophy that has a cooler name than “Platinum Trophy.”
Organic

Players can unlock most Primal trophies organically, that is, unlocked without very much conscious effort by progressing through the campaign. In a single session, it was common to unlock 15-20% of trophies. By the time the campaign is over, there should just be a handful of trophies left.

A fair amount of trophies are related to the story, as per usual. Another large cluster are related to getting kills with specific types of weapons. As with most games, its good to be conscious of varying weapon strategy. The trophies for weapon kills pop after 100, so if you’re banging away with a two-handed club and the trophy unlocks, just switch to the spear or one-handed club for a bit.

Primal lacks the weapon variety typical of the Far Cry experience. But what’s available is really fun to use and looks pretty cool too.

The two that may require the most attention are the sling and the traps. The sling requires head shots to get kills with, so it’s best to focus on lightly armored enemies and tag them from close range. Traps can be a breeze if you aren’t the kind of gamer who uses this tool. Simply rush an enemy and throw the trap at their feet. Players may take some damage, but to make a platinum trophy, you got to crack some eggs.

Mop-Up

Mop-up trophies are what’s left once the campaign is over, or trophies that require conscious effort and time investment. Generally these trophies have a low percentage earned rate, like under 10% of players who’ve unlocked the trophy. For Primal, a lot of mop-up trophies will be unlocked by exploring the map and taking down some side quests.

The wilds can be dangerous, be sure to bring a furry friend.

The “Expert Wenja” trophy requires unlocking all skills. Players won’t be able to unlock all the skills just by leveling. Thankfully there are side quests that unlock extra skill points. Quests that unlock skill points will say so on the map. “Master Tracker” and “Crush Your Enemies” trophies are related to specific side quests as well, Beast Kill and Tribal Clash respectively. Most side quests don’t need completed. So, to be more efficient its best to tackle these critical ones first, and save the rest for after the platinum unlocks.

TL;DR

None of these mop up trophies take very long to unlock. As far as platinum trophies go, Primal is one of the easiest. The game manages to be a lot of fun, and the quick campaign and platinum trophy feels very satisfying, without requiring the huge time commitment that can dull an experience. Plus, its damn fun to fight your foes with a big ass club from the back of a giant bear.
