Freedom Finger – PAX East Preview

Freedom Finger is a satire in every way, and I mean that 100% as a compliment. Wide Right Interactive has made one hell of a side scroller that will not soon be forgotten.

This game is described as a “batshit crazy space shooter” and that it is. You play as an airman tasked with eliminating space terrorists. Naturally, your ship is shaped like a hand giving the middle finger. The game had the same fast pace, stick rotating gameplay you’d expect from any side scrolling space shooter. Enemies of all shapes and sizes wiz across your screen as you dip, dodge, and dive around enemy fire.

Along with being able to return fire you are also able to use your handy abilities (pun intended). You can not only punch enemies, but you can grab them too. Grabbing them gives you two options. You can either hurl them back at incoming foes or you can use said ship’s attached weapon as your own.

Despite the excellent gameplay, our favorite part was actually the sound design. This game’s soundtrack and art style are really where it shines. The soundtrack is different from level to level and is hand picked to match the atmosphere. There are 20+ musical artists on this game’s soundtrack, fueling the bad ass, ridiculous fighting.

Our time with the game gave us a standard space experience but, during the preview, we saw many more styles and creatures. Nearly everything on screen is hand drawn and it makes for a very distinctive experience.

Freedom Finger is as comical as it is entertaining. We are looking forward to it coming out sometime in 2019 on all major consoles and PC.
