Darksburg – PAX East Preview

Darksburg takes a lot of the things that makes a game like Diablo 3 great and simplifies them, making them more accessible to the masses. While playing a big action MMO can be daunting for many, the core mechanics can resonate with everyone.

In Darksburg you and up to three friends can play through the campaign together. Your party of four is tasked with going from point to point without being killed at the hands of an undead army that would like nothing more than to add to their numbers. While a lot of games have done this before, what really sets this title apart are the controls. They are simple, maybe even too simple, but we’ll wait to cast that verdict until we’ve played through the entire game.

Everything you do is basically controlled by the right button on the mouse. You point and click the right button to move the character of your choosing and you hover over an enemy pushing the right button in order to attack. After about twenty minutes with the game this became quite awkward and tiring on your hand. During our time with the game the only other control you used was for your special attack that was controlled by hitting the E key on the keyboard.

While the gameplay was fun, the simplicity and duality of using one button for every command caused some chaotic and often frustrating moments. Though the demo wasn’t incredibly hard, it was still frustrating when you want the character to move and they attack or vice versa.

The game had a very gothic aesthetic that really set the tone for some grade A zombie killing. This could be just the game for those overwhelmed by some of bigger games that Darksburg clearly draws inspiration from –Diablo specifically according to the developers.

Philip is better at buying video games than he is at playing them. He was once told “it must suck to love something so much and be so terrible at it.” As a boy he would write terrible poems about himself and Ross Perot. He enjoys the best and worst of all forms of media, but nothing in the middle. Puyo Puyo Tetris has almost caused unreconcilable differences between him and his wife. He’s never had a hangover, but not from lack of trying.
