Aggelos – PAX East Preview

Aggelos doesn’t feel like it was made in the last twenty years. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s a simple action platformer that has more in common with Mega Man than anything out today. The light feeling of the character sprite leaping from position to position across the screen is matched with the story of saving the kingdom after getting a mission from an escaped princess. It is presented and done in a way that feels like a game made for the Nintendo Entertainment System rather than modern consoles. But with tight controls and a simple system, the game keeps the bloat of the modern action adventure fantasy game out and this lean pixelated fine cut shines.

Incorporating a traditional upgrade system, it resembles Zelda 2 in its more passive elements, while executing fun exploration though forests, caverns, and even underwater as it creates a distinct feeling of nostalgia. We’re hoping it doesn’t suffer from the tried and true, been there and done that. What it has in comfort, it feels too soft and familiar to stand out. While the full game may give more to the experience as it goes on, from what was sampled it feels deeply needed.

Released to a well received welcome on the Steam Store, it makes its way for a console debut, coming to the PlayStation 4, XBONE, and Nintendo Switch later this year, on April 26, 2019.
