Why Can’t I Stop Playing Clash Royale?

It's like an addiction that I like...

I’m on my phone all day. It’s in my hand everywhere I go. Yours is too. That’s right, we know you take your phone in the bathroom so don’t deny it!

With a device so constantly accessible, it’s pretty common for gamers like us to want to do some gaming. Our phones are super powerful and can put out some seriously great content, so it’s no wonder that we’re addicted.

But there’s this stupid game I’m addicted to. We all have them. For some of you it is/was Candy Crush or something similar. For me, it’s Crash Royale.

Crash Royale comes from the same folks, Supercell, who made Clash of Clans. There’s almost no chance you haven’t heard of it. It’s been in ads in your other mobile apps, on social media, and Supercell has even run Super Bowl ads to promote their mobile games.

In fact, so many of us have heard of Crash Royale that Supercell reported a $1 billion revenue from Clash Royale in less than one year from its release. Yeah, you read that right. ONE BILLION DOLLARS IN LESS THAN A YEAR FROM A FREE GAME!

Well, it’s free for me. I’ve never spent one dime on the game. Sure, it takes me longer to progress than others and I actually have to wait for chests full of treasure to unlock, but it’s easy to just pop in and out of the game – hitting a round here and there when I can.

But sometimes, Clash Royale feels more like an obligation than a game. Clans are involved, and many of them put participating requirements in place to continue being a member. The better a clan does as a whole, the better each player does individually. It’s a system that works… except for when I don’t have the time to play. If I don’t play enough, I risk getting kicked out of my clan. If I get kicked out of my clan, what incentive is there to keep playing with no one keeping me accountable? Why am I only playing a game because someone is holding me accountable?

Weird.

I keep coming back to Clash Royale, just like you keep coming back to your favorite mobile game. Do you have a love/hate habit with a mobile game? Maybe it’s not a mobile game, but is there a title you just can’t keep away from?
